On my most recent trip to Trader Joe’s, I picked up a package of one of my all-time favorite cookies. Triple Ginger Snaps. I am a big fan of ginger snaps, and this version is by far the best one, IMHO. The flavor is off the charts. The food geniuses at Trader Joe’s went ahead and tripled the ginger flavor. They are made with ginger trifecta, crystallized ginger, ginger puree, and ground ginger. If you don’t quite know exactly what these are, don’t worry. The flavor tells you everything you need to know.
Ginger snaps have been around for almost ten centuries. That’s a long time! No one really knows who invented them. Some people believe it was German monks during the Middle Ages who first came up with the idea. If only we knew who the innovator was. There should be statues in his or her honor. What a crazy and revolutionary culinary idea! Let’s make an intense-tasting cookie out of a root used for medicinal purposes! Can you imagine the reaction from the head monk? “Are you nuts?” “No, sir. I’m just a simple heretic.” And despite the early doubters, it is still a unique favorite all these centuries later.
And for a cookie, it has many health benefits that other cookies only wish they had. Which is not a real surprise here. After all, ginger is a root vegetable. It should be healthy. It’s a veggie cookie! When I Googled ginger snaps, the results suggested as much. Not that I require my snacks to be healthy. I buy and consume snacks mainly because they are pleasant to my taste buds. But a reasonably healthy cookie that tastes this decadent is very cool! Ginger snaps are not as fattening as other cookies, although if you eat the entire container in one sitting, you nullify the benefits of this. Don’t ask me how I know.
Unlike some of trader joe’s other cookie varieties, 6 of these ginger filled cookies will only set you back 120 calories, The Triple Ginger Snaps are not gluten free and because of the butter and eggs are off the list for vegans as well.
The Packaging
I like the container these cookies come in. Many of the cookies sold as a Trader Joe’s brand come in the same type of packaging. You can see the cookies inside the package before you buy them, and they look tasty. The package looks like it was prepared by your grandmother who just baked a bunch of delicious cookies and wants to send some home with you. That’s a brilliant marketing strategy. I paid $3.99 for the cookies, which isn’t bad for this kind of quality product. I’ve paid more for a lot less.
The Texture
What I like most about these cookies is that they are not hard as a rock. My teeth enjoy them as much, if not more than my taste buds do. They are soft compared to most ginger snaps you will eat in your lifetime. With these ginger snaps, you don’t have to chew gingerly to preserve your smile. By the way, I wonder if that’s how the word gingerly came into the English language. As in, ‘Ginger has to eat her ginger snaps gingerly because of her acute gingivitis.’ So I looked it up. According to the dictionary, my theory is not correct. But even so, no caution is needed with these cookies. Chew your Triple Ginger Snaps with abandon and gusto. Trader Joe’s doesn’t get the credit it deserves for inventing and carrying this amazing product in its stores. I’m pretty sure my dentist doesn’t feel the same way.
Where Can I Find At My Local Trader Joe’s?
The triple ginger snap cookies are usually located in the freezer aisle on the shelves above the freezer towards the front of the store. If you see the Joe-Joe’s sandwich cookies, dunkers or mini chocolate chip cookies you’re in the right area!
